Institutional Review Board (IRB)

Post Approval Review

The WSU Office of Research Assurances in conjunction with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) has established a human subject research Post Approval Review (PAR) program. All protocols are eligible for review; exempt, expedited or full board approved. Studies are selected for a variety of reasons, including vulnerable populations, funding sources and risk levels.

The PAR Program's purpose is to provide an opportunity for researchers to review all of their materials and processes in order to assure adequate protection of human subjects of research at WSU. As a side benefit, the PAR will help you to prepare for your next IRB Continuing Review (CR), as well as for any sponsor or regulatory audits that you may face.

The PAR process will be initiated a couple of months before the next CR application is due. This will allow enough time for the review to be completed and for changes to be made that will assure compliance and facilitate the CR. The reviewer will contact the PI to arrange in informal meeting to explain the review process and expectations, and to ask and answer questions.

After reading all of the related materials and a preliminary meeting with the PI to answer questions and deliver organizational materials, the reviewer will conduct a site visit, including observation of the informed consent process. The reviewer will forward any deviations to the IRB Coordinator for follow-up. After any necessary changes have been approved by the Coordinator (or IRB for more serious deviations) and the review is "complete" the reviewer will submit a summary to the Coordinator who will convey it to the IRB. Feedback forms will be sent to the Investigators after the review is finalized. We ask that you please take the time to complete and return them so that we can continue to improve the program.

If you have any questions, please email the IRB at or(509)335-3668.
