HIPAA has been implemented as of April 14, 2003. The Rule governs how health care providers use and disclose personally identifiable health information on their patients, including use and disclosure for research purposes. HIPAA Privacy Regulations: Uses and Disclosures for ResearchThe final rule to the Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information (the Privacy Rule) are in the August 14, 2002 Federal Register (Uses and Disclosures for Research Purposes, 45CFR 164.512(i)). Investigators conducting any research using individuals’ personal health information should review the rules.
